Plant the Parkways: New Trees will Color the Medians

Volunteers gathered Friday afternoon for Plant the Parkways, a project that culminates early next spring with the planting of up to 1,000 new trees.

Their job on Friday, and over the next few weeks, is to map all the existing trees in the century-old parkway system that frames the city's core.

The tree survey,  led by the Memphis Tree Board, is being carried out by about a dozen volunteers from the West Tennessee Chapter of the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council and two from Shelby County 4-H.

They will identify each tree's variety, measure the diameter and note if it is in reasonable condition, needs to be monitored or is in such poor shape that it should be removed.
