20 Memphis Music Happenings This Week

Memphis music is legendary and has made a significant impact on musicians all over the world. As we honor the sacred history of our musical culture, we also want to share what’s happening in the Memphis music scene right now. Check out these local musicians, buy their albums, and support local.

From a tiny town in western Kentucky, Brennan Villines has called “The Bluff City” home since 2006 where the singer/songwriter invented himself in an old Memphis mansion-turned-bar in Victorian Village. The style he developed there – a seamless blend of jazz, R&B and playful, funky pop – is all over his 2015 debut solo album “Free.”

On a quiet night at the legendary Sun Studio, three friends and local music veterans decided to form a ukulele band. Fast-forward a couple years and two additional members later, and they’ve opened for the uke’s biggest kahuna, Jake Shimabukuro, released their first album and transformed what once was a fun side project into sustaining ukulele magic. In both live performances and on their Blue Barrel Records debut album, Memphis Ukulele Band’s covers and originals exude pure fun while exploring the genre-bending range of the ukulele, from Hill Country blues to pop, reggae, and what the band calls “ukulele soul.” Come join them this Saturday at Lafayette’s!

Showtunes on Sunday for an excellent cause! Come help raise money for HIV/AIDS services and celebrate the musicals you love most. Request your favorites and sing a long! Recommended $20 donation to Friends For Life Corporation gets you super awesome drink specials and prize drawings every half hour. There are some amazing gifts from Babalu Tapas & Tacos – Overton Square, Flemmings Prime Steak House, and Schweinehaus BBQ to name a few. Miss Julia Le Boom will be our lovely hostess and emcee for the day and she is “One! Singular sensation every little step she takes!” Sing a long with Brennan Villines as he takes us down Sunset Boulavard!
