Volunteers still completed dozens of the more than 100 service projects originally scheduled, although others were postponed due to Friday's winter storm and ahead of another storm forecast for Monday evening, said Andrea Hill, director of Volunteer Memphis, an arm of Leadership Memphis that coordinated the event.
The four-day event, now in its second year, carried extra weight this year for a city preparing for MLK50, a commemoration of King's legacy 50 years after his assassination at a Downtown motel, now part of the National Civil Rights Museum.
"I think people are looking to serve together, and what better day to do it on that MLK Day," Hill said. "But I've been telling people this is just the beginning of service. There are 364 other days."
