Mid-Southerners Spend MLK Day Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Many Ways

Almost since the first year that MLK Day became a national holiday, it's been viewed as a day of service by many. Many volunteers joined with non-profits Clean Memphis and Jacob's Ladder. They cleaned-up the Beltline area of east Memphis.

Other projects are planned in the area near Hollywood and Southern, where 17 formerly blighted properties were torn down. That same area is slated for revitalization later this year.

Memphis City Beautiful partnered with volunteers from the Buckman Corporation at Springdale Elementary School in north Memphis. They spent the day raking leaves, working in the garden, and breaking up and removing ice from the parking lot.
