Midnight Movie Madness at Malco: Dolls, 'Freaks' and More

A phenomenon of 1970s New York that expanded to smaller cities, college campuses and other places hoping to attract young, hip or adventurous moviegoers, midnight movies return to Memphis with a in-some-cases-literal vengeance this weekend with a series titled "Midnight at the Studio."

Initiated by Malco Theatres executive vice president Jimmy Tashie and programmed by Mike McCarthy, a pioneer of Memphis independent filmmaking and a longtime purveyor of what he calls "unpopular culture," the series begins with midnight screenings Friday and Saturday at Malco's Studio on the Square in Overton Square.
