Pet Friendly Memphis

Pet Friendly Memphis

It wasn’t that long ago, maybe a decade, that most Mexican food you found in the states was some variation on a national chain doing nachos. Not anymore. Babalu Tacos & Tapas serves, obviously, tacos and tapas, as well as salads, tortas, table-side prepared guacamole. Oh, and the drinks are killer. There’s a patio that wraps around the building that is dog-friendly, but make sure you bring a leash.

  • Join Overton Square for a family-friendly Independence Celebration concert in the Tower Courtyard on Sunday, July 2.
  • Enjoy the rockin’ sounds of the Jackson Regiment from Mississippi’s 41st Army Band as they tell the Army story through their toe-tapping, upbeat music. The Fire Museum of Memphis joins the party with fun vintage fire trucks, and will be on hand to teach our youngest visitors more important summer fire safety tips.
  • A selection of local beers and seasonal refreshments will be available for purchase. Folding chairs and blankets are welcome; no coolers or outside alcoholic beverages, please. This concert is free and open to the public.
  • The Independence Celebration is proud to welcome Alpha Omega Veterans Services, Inc., helping Memphis’ homeless and disabled military veterans through support services.

Barbecue Spaghetti, The Memphis Specialty You Need To Try

Barbecue Spaghetti, The Memphis Specialty You Need To Try

The Vernon family has been operating the Bar B Q Shop in Memphis since 1983, and closely guarding its secret BBQ sauce recipe for even longer. You’ll definitely want to slather that sauce all over the restaurant’s ultra-tender ribs, a longtime menu mainstay.

The other signature offering of the restaurant is one that you probably haven’t seen before — barbecued spaghetti, a dish that was allegedly invented at the restaurant and is now a Memphis staple. It’s exactly what it sounds like: spaghetti, tomato sauce, and a whole lot of BBQ pulled pork. You’ll never want to go back to bolognese again.

Editorial: What’s in Overton Square's name? That which Loeb decides

Though Loeb Properties owns a majority of the property that the casual visitor would describe as Overton Square, there are also parcels — such as the site of Maggie’s Pharm — that aren’t owned by Loeb and aren’t technically Overton Square.

  • Barbecued brisket at Stanley Bar B Que

I watched David Scott Walker prepare a brisket at the recent Memphis in May World Championship
Barbecue Cooking Contest. I wasn’t able to return 13 hours later to taste the finished product, but Walker told me the preparation and the cooking process was about the same as the way it’s done at his restaurant, Stanley Bar B Que in Overton Square.

“Memphis Creeps Into Your Soul”

“Memphis Creeps Into Your Soul”

Memphis breathes space, music and relaxation. Throw in great food, friendly folks and heaps of history and you’ve got a place worth lingering for. And that’s what I did, for about ten days. It felt good not having to pack up again after two or three nights. I guess I just needed to stay put somewhere for a while.

The 14 Things You Have To Eat and Drink Before You're a True Memphian

The 14 Things You Have To Eat and Drink Before You're a True Memphian

The standard time frame to be considered a true Memphian is 25 years. So the good news is, there's plenty of time to eat and drink this entire list. The bad news is, to be a true Memphian, you clearly cannot list “healthy eater” or “vegetarian” among your defining characteristics... at least, not right away.

(Late-night) burgers

There are two must-eat late-night burgers: the Soul Burger at Earnestine & Hazel’s, and the Greek Burger at Alex’s Tavern. (Some would say burgers at 2am from Krystal count. They don't.) Those Memphians unable to stay out past 10pm can get a decent amount of street cred by hitting a Huey’s or Tops at any time of day.

Everything BBQ

The short list of BBQ must-eats: a pulled pork sandwich on Texas toast from the Bar-B-Q Shop; dry-rubbed ribs from the Rendezvous; nachos from Central; pizza from Coletta’s (extra points if it's heart-shaped); spaghetti from Interstate; Cornish hen from Cozy Corner; and bologna from Payne’s.

A pimento by another name is still as sweet

A pimento by another name is still as sweet

For years folks have run in Holiday Ham for a nice sandwich, a take-out container of Papa’s Pimento Cheese or a nice big ham bone to throw in a pot of soup. But these days there’s a new deli in town, offering all that plus a little more.

Pimentos Kitchen + Market opened in October in the new development on Poplar just east of Massey, and guess what? You can still get Papa’s Pimento Cheese, because when it comes down to it, it’s almost the same.

“Holiday Hams Holding is the umbrella company for both companies," said Andie Ray, director of marketing. “Pimentos Kitchen + Market is the rebrand, it’s Holiday Ham 2.0.”
