Roughly four miles and 45 years separated rock band KISS’s first appearance in Memphis from its last. In April of 1974, the group – fresh off the release of their self-titled debut – played Lafayette’s Music Room in Overton Square; on Saturday night the group brought its “End of the Road” farewell tour downtown for a stop at the FedExForum.

My Favorite Things: Central BBQ nachos

My Favorite Things: Central BBQ nachos

Before you take away my Memphis card for not liking barbecue pizza, barbecue spaghetti or barbecue nachos, let me point out there are exceptions to these made-in-Memphis dishes. Barbecue spaghetti at the Bar-B-Q Shop is a whole different thing from sauce poured over noodles and I love the stuff – more on that another day. And while I’m not going to get excited over barbecue pizza, the baby one at Pete & Sam’s is not so bad – it’s tiny, after all.

Go Out: Things to do in Memphis for Jan. 11-17

FRIDAY

More than "Aquaman" or "The Last Jedi" or any other special effects adventure or fantasy, "Free Solo" — a harrowing documentary about solo "free climber" Alex Honnold's attempt to scale the sheer 7,500-foot cliff face of the "El Capitan" rock formation in Yosemite National Park — should absolutely dazzle in the IMAX format. (Some of its vertiginous real-life footage is so dizzying it would be hard to watch even on a cellphone.) That's why the movie is returning for one week only to the IMAX auditorium at the Malco Paradiso, to take advantage of the giant-screen, high-definition format.
