Cover Story: Crosstown Concourse's Underground ...

An estimated 3,000 people visit Crosstown Concourse each day, most of them working for or a customer, client or patient of one of the building’s tenants. There are also more than 260 apartments on the property as well as a high school that just opened its doors for its first class of 125 freshmen.

In addition to all the people who visit Crosstown daily since it opened in August 2017, there is also a steady stream of people showing up to do freelance assignments or to work remotely from their employer’s or home office.

Shannon Little left her job in marketing with the Huey's restaurant chain in Memphis to start her own solo marketing and social media venture. Such ventures at first glance might seem like a dime a dozen, leaving her with a task that had to be addressed before meeting with her first client.

She now handles marketing and social media efforts for several small businesses and is able to juggle all the tasks that go with that because she took the time to form a plan for herself at the very beginning.

"Define your target audience, your offerings and what value those offerings can bring to that audience," Little said, "My business became stronger, and my processes more streamlined, when I was able to define those terms."

A pimento by another name is still as sweet

For years folks have run in Holiday Ham for a nice sandwich, a take-out container of Papa’s Pimento Cheese or a nice big ham bone to throw in a pot of soup. But these days there’s a new deli in town, offering all that plus a little more.

Pimentos Kitchen + Market opened in October in the new development on Poplar just east of Massey, and guess what? You can still get Papa’s Pimento Cheese, because when it comes down to it, it’s almost the same.

“Holiday Hams Holding is the umbrella company for both companies," said Andie Ray, director of marketing. “Pimentos Kitchen + Market is the rebrand, it’s Holiday Ham 2.0.”

I had a craving the other day for a pimento cheese sandwich at Holiday Deli & Ham Co. I love them.After ordering it, I realized I didn't know the history of this sandwich, which I consider one of Memphis's greatest delicacies. I did a little investigative reporting. The restaurant chain's marketing director, Andie Mason Ray, told me to come by Pimento's Cafe & Market, a new member of the Holiday Deli & Ham Co. family. It has been open for only three weeks.

Pimento’s Kitchen + Market opens Wednesday at 6450 Poplar. It’s the same folks who own Holiday Ham and Deli, and the concept is similar, but the items are different, and beer will be sold at Pimento’s, which will also carry local items from Frost Bake Shop and serve local J Brooks coffee. Pimento’s will be open 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
